Local Governing Bodies

As one of the largest volunteer forces in the country, school governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education, raise school standards and are key to the all round effectiveness of a a school.

ELAN is a multi-academy trust, which means our schools are part of a wider organisation governed by a Board of Trustees. The Trustees are responsible for the overall leadership, strategy and accountability of the trust.

Each school also has a Local Governing Body (LGB). The LGB is a committee of the Trust Board and works closely with school leaders to support and challenge the school's development and improvement.

Local governors bring valuable knowledge of the school and its community. They act as a link between the school, its families and the Trust Board, providing local insight and helping trustees understand the needs, strengths and priorities of each school.

While the Trust Board retains overall responsibility for decision-making, local governors play an important role in supporting school improvement, monitoring progress, and ensuring the voices of the school community are heard.

The role of the LGB is to:

  • ensure there is clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

  • understand and uphold the school’s values

  • hold school leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils

  • ensure the school maintains effective accountability and reporting measures

  • oversee the financial performance of the school and making sure allocated money is well spent in line with Trust policy and procedures

  • ensure that the governing body and school complies with all legal and statutory requirements

  • represent the school and the community it serves

  • follow the principles and commitments set out in the ELAN Code of Governance for School Governors.

Our LGBs provide an exceptional level of challenge and support to each school on a voluntary basis and are an essential part of what we do as a trust.

The LGB Terms of Reference outlines the membership, quorum and proceedings for governor meetings. The terms of reference are reviewed annually by the trust Board.

All governors must declare their pecuniary interests. A person's pecuniary interests are their business interests (for example their employment, trade, profession, contracts, or any company with which they are associated) and wider financial interests they might have (for example trust funds, investments, and assets including land and property). Pecuniary interests involve an actual or potential financial gain or loss.

Pecuniary interests are published for all of our schools below:
